Chapter 16 Dog-Headed Shaman
Chapter 16 Dog-Headed Shaman
The two quickly turned back.
They rushed back to the halfling settlement.
"The situation is a bit bad."
Kane said in a low voice, his gaze sweeping over the crumbling defenses.
The rough wooden fence was damaged in many places and was on the verge of collapse after being attacked by the kobolds.
Whenever a kobold climbs up a ladder, a barrage of arrows is fired from behind the fence.
One group falls, and another group shouts to take their place.
Inside the enclosure, there are only thirty combat-ready halflings.
They mostly wore light half-body armor and relied on slingshots, light crossbows, and short bows for ranged attacks.
However, there are very few skilled close-combat fighters.
The elder who had once received Kane and Shar was now wearing chainmail and wielding a thick-backed mace.
"Hold on! For our homeland!"
He roared and smashed the brains of a newly emerged kobold into the ground.
The air was filled with the smell of blood and herbs.
Both sides are attempting arson.
The kobolds tried to burn down the fence, while the halflings fought the fire and hurled burning arrows at the enemy lines.
But anyone can see that:
Faced with the siege of numerous kobolds, it was only a matter of time before the settlement fell.
……
Kane and Shar observed quietly from the forest canopy on the flank.
Their eyes were fixed on the rear of the kobold lines.
A dog-headed shaman, adorned with bone ornaments and riding on the back of a giant lizard, is waving his staff and chanting incantations.
The dim halo continuously fell upon the front-line warriors, making their attacks even more frenzied.
Beside the shaman stood an exceptionally tall kobold warrior, whose scales gleamed with a dark red sheen beneath his heavy armor.
"Dragon Bloodline".
Kane narrowed his eyes. "This is a bit troublesome."
He looked at Shar.
Shar raised his crossbow, aimed through the gaps in the branches and leaves for a long time, and finally shook his head slightly.
"It kept moving, and the guards were blocking it too tightly."
"The Hunter's Mark can lock onto targets up to 90 feet away, but we're not sure about that right now."
Kane silently watched the battlefield.
The kobolds, under the shaman's command, launched a well-organized attack, and the halfling defenses were gradually being worn down.
"The shaman must be eliminated, or enough chaos must be created."
He thought quickly.
Charging head-on is suicide unless you use your "undying" trump card.
Furthermore, the distance of the Mind Wedge is insufficient, and it can only be used three times.
After a moment, he spoke in a low voice:
"I'll force it out, at least to get the guards to leave."
"Be prepared, this might be your only chance."
Shar nodded emphatically and raised his crossbow again.
His breathing gradually became light and long, as if he had become one with the crossbow in his hand.
The next second, Kane slid down the tree trunk like a cheetah.
They quietly approached the edge of the kobold army from the flank, and then suddenly appeared!
"Hey! Look this way!"
He shouted, deliberately exposing himself.
A lone human appearing on the flank of the battlefield immediately drew attention.
The shaman on high spot spotted him and screamed.
A group of about seven or eight kobold warriors suddenly broke away from the group and charged forward, howling.
Kane turned and fled, nimbly disappearing into the dense forest.
The group of kobolds gave chase.
Once they had been led deep enough, Kane suddenly stopped and turned around.
The pursuers, panting heavily, froze for a moment, then pounced fiercely.
"Too slow."
Kane drew his dagger and darted through the trees.
These ordinary kobolds are as powerful as ordinary cultists.
He used the "Mage's Hand" to disrupt the ambush, and the dagger accurately struck his throat and heart.
Amidst screams, most of them collapsed and died.
The two remaining wounded creatures scrambled back to safety.
Kane didn't chase after them. He watched their hurried retreating figures and wiped the blood off his dagger.
"Go and deliver the message."
The deserter scrambled back to the shaman in a panic, pointing at the jungle and screaming.
The shaman hissed impatiently, and the tall dragonblood warrior beside him strode forward and swung his heavy hammer down.
boom!boom!
The heads of the two deserters were smashed.
"waste."
The shaman cursed in kobold language.
In the kobolds' simple military law, defeat means death.
The shaman shifted his attention back to the main battlefield and continued to urge an attack.
"Speed up! Crush them!"
In its eyes, it was nothing more than an annoying fly.
In the jungle, Shar frowned as he watched deserters being executed.
"The attempt to lure the enemy failed?"
Nevertheless, she suppressed her pent-up emotions.
He lowered his breathing further and aimed the crossbow bolt steadily at the shaman.
Waiting for the right opportunity.
The next moment, Kane reappeared at the edge of the battlefield.
He held the head of the kobold he had previously severed in an open area on the flank of the battlefield.
Stack them up one by one.
"Look carefully!"
He shouted towards the direction of the kobold army:
"This is what happens!"
The effects are immediate.
For the kobold tribe, publicly stacking the heads of their own kind was the ultimate humiliation and provocation.
The entire front line was immediately thrown into turmoil, and the offensive stalled.
"Hiss—!!!"
The shaman's piercing screams were twisted with rage.
It sensed the fear and wavering of its subordinates, and that its authority was being challenged.
"Kill that worm! Tear him to pieces!"
The dragonblood kobold warrior let out a deafening roar, his body glowing faintly red.
The shaman's blessing has been bestowed upon it.
It strode heavily toward Kane at an astonishing speed, leaving more than a dozen elite guards far behind.
"They've taken the bait."
Kane's eyes sharpened, and he turned and dashed into the jungle at full speed.
He used the terrain to his advantage, but the Dragonblood Doghead's power and speed surged under his blessing, and he relentlessly pursued him.
Seizing an opening, Kane used the tree trunk as leverage to leap in the opposite direction, his dagger viciously stabbing towards the gap in the warrior's armor on the side of his neck!
"clang!"
The dagger was stuck by the thick scales and the edge of the chainmail, and could not penetrate.
The Dragonblood Warrior, writhing in pain and enraged, swung his other iron gauntlet with astonishing speed.
boom!
Kane only had time to bend his arm to block before being sent flying by the force of the impact, crashing heavily into the tree trunk.
A sweet taste rose in my throat, blood gushed out, and a sharp pain shot through my ribs.
It may have a bone fracture.
The dragon-blooded dog-headed warrior grinned menacingly, dragging his giant hammer as he approached step by step, reveling in the fear of his prey.
Kane leaned against the tree trunk, seemingly unable to escape.
However, the moment the other party stepped within three steps, a cold smile appeared on his blood-stained face.
"The Wedge of the Soul"
The invisible mental impact momentarily blanked out the opponent's consciousness.
The Dragonblood Warrior's body stiffened abruptly, and a moment of blankness appeared in his crimson eyes.
It's now!
Kane unleashed the full power of "Hand of the Mage".
A dagger that fell to the ground during the fight, and another short blade that quietly slipped out of his sleeve.
Under the mage's control, they transformed into two streaks of cold light!
From bottom to top, it pierced straight into the Dragonblood Kobold's eyes, which were not protected by heavy armor!
"Awooo—!!!"
A mournful wail echoed through the forest.
The Dragonblood Warrior dropped his warhammer, covered his face with his claws, and thick green blood gushed from between his fingers.
It went completely into a blind rage, wildly attacking everything around it with its claws.
Trees broke, and soil and rocks flew everywhere.
Kane seized the opportunity to charge toward the group of kobold guards who had just chased him into the woods.
"Over here! You idiot!"
He shouted and then dashed out of the woods.
The blind and maddened Dragonblood Warrior heard the commotion and immediately roared and gave chase.
Having lost its sight, it becomes enraged and sees any moving target that smells of kobolds as an enemy.
The heavy claw strikes and blind charge instantly tore several guards who couldn't dodge in time to pieces and flattened them.
Kane led the maddened beast and the chaos it created out of the jungle and back to the flank of the main battlefield.
A horrifying scene has captured everyone's attention:
An injured human leaps out of the forest.
Following closely behind was the Dragonblood Warrior, whose eyes were gushing blood as he frantically attacked his "kind."
The scene was chaotic.
The kobold shaman was stunned.
"No...this is impossible!"
It couldn't understand what was happening, and was both shocked and furious as it watched its strongest warrior slaughter its subordinates.
It quickly spurred the monitor lizard forward, attempting to cast a soothing or healing spell.
At this moment, its attention was completely drawn to the berserk warrior, and the guard formation began to loosen due to the chaos in front.
"Shar!"
Kane silently chanted to himself, dodging the Dragonblood Warrior's chaotic attacks while observing the shaman's position.
The kobold warrior's movements became increasingly sluggish due to the excruciating pain and blood loss, yet each swing remained deadly.
Just as the shaman got close enough...
It raised its staff, chanted the incantation halfway through, and then stood relatively still, attempting to lock onto the berserk warrior.
"In the name of our ancestral spirits, quell this madness—"
A fierce glint flashed in Kane's eyes.
He lunged forward with all his might, simultaneously unleashing the full power of "Mage's Hand"!
"Fall down."
The heavy hammer belonging to the Dragonblood Warrior on the ground could not be lifted despite the mage's full effort to pry it off.
Instead, it suddenly rolled over and slammed into his ankle.
The already unsteady behemoth suddenly lost its balance and crashed forward.
Its massive body positioned itself perfectly between the shaman and Kane, briefly obscuring the view of some of the guards.
At that very moment—
Whoosh!
A crossbow bolt shot out silently from the dark canopy of the jungle, piercing the noisy air.
Precisely seize the moment when the shaman is distracted while casting spells, and when a momentary gap appears in the barrier in front of him due to the dragon warrior's fall—
It penetrates into his neck from the side and rear.
A sharp arrowhead drew out a spray of foul blood, which seeped out from in front of the throat!
The shaman's incantation abruptly stopped.
"Gulp... Uh..."
It futilely clutched its neck, its eyes filled with astonishment and vicious resentment.
It wobbled and fell off the monitor lizard's back.
Almost simultaneously—
Kane plunged the dagger in his hand deep into the eye socket of the struggling Dragonblood Warrior.
Then stir it violently.
The battlefield seemed to have been muted.
First, the shaman was sniped and fell to the ground.
Immediately afterward, the Dragonblood Warrior let out a mournful cry and then remained motionless.
Finally, there was a brief silence.
"The shaman is dead!"
"The Warriors are dead too!"
Terrified screams erupted among the kobolds.
"Run!" "Run!"
These bullying creatures still hold a numerical advantage.
But they had no will to fight anymore, and crying out, they threw down their weapons and scattered into the wilderness.
On the fence, the exhausted halfling was stunned in disbelief.
Immediately, a deafening cheer erupted from those who had survived the ordeal.
Kane collapsed to one knee, coughing up several mouthfuls of bloody saliva.
The halfling elder pushed open the broken gate of the fence and led everyone out in excitement.
Kane struggled to his feet and wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, which he had been trying to conceal.
He looked up in the direction from which the crossbow bolts had come.
Shar's figure could be vaguely seen in the canopy on the other side.
She gazed at him from afar, her eyes brimming with an indescribable light.
