Chapter 8 Arrival
Chapter 8 Arrival
It was a truly wondrous feeling; he felt as if he had truly transformed into a nimble raven, gently flapping his wings. He could even clearly sense the surging air currents flowing across the sky.
Is this magic? It's so fantastical. I wonder just how powerful Victor really is, since I know nothing about the extraordinary powers in this world.
Victor's move truly amazed Fafnir.
Inside the carriage, everything returned to normal, and Fafnir was somewhat savoring the feeling from just now.
"How about it, little Fafnir?" Victor chuckled. "This copper coin is enough for her to have a few good meals."
"Victor, you're being ridiculous," Bishop Andrei's voice suddenly rang out before Fafnir could reply, his tone flat:
"You have seriously violated the 'Safety Treaty on Spells and Related Abilities of the Holy Kingdom of the Elves.' You are not allowed to use third-tier spirit world spells in the city without permission. This will not be allowed to happen again."
"Um... I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Ms. Ze Ruo. I'll be more careful next time. This is the fastest way for me to give her the coin," Victor said with a slightly embarrassed smile.
……
Fafnir was still replaying the scene in his mind:
Oh, there's still black bread. It's probably a mix of various wheat flours without salt. Although I've never eaten this kind of bread before, I imagine it must be very difficult to swallow...
By the way, can I learn magic too? I really want to experience supernatural power. Mr. Victor seems quite approachable; I wonder if I'll have a chance to ask him for guidance...
……
Soon, the carriage stopped at the gate, which was wide enough for two carriages to pass side by side. The metal sign at the gate read "Church of the God of Death, Lorraine Grammar School".
"Alright, kids, we've arrived. Please get off the bus."
As Victor spoke, he waited for Bishop Andrei to alight from the carriage before stepping down from the right side of the carriage.
Fafner and his two companions followed closely behind.
"Everyone, please get off the bus!"
Victor's loud voice echoed at the door.
Soon after, the students also got off the bus. The twenty-odd people lined up in three rows and gathered at the school gate, waiting for the next instructions from Bishop Andrei and Victor.
"Victor, lead the students to their dormitories," Bishop Andrei said, then walked straight into the school gate.
"Yes, teacher," Victor turned around: "Little ones, come with me. The three of you, go to the logistics office to report to your teacher. It's at the end of the corridor on the first floor of the main teaching building."
Victor pointed to Fafnir and the other two.
Upon entering the school gate, Fafnir saw a three-story building made of gray stone, which should be the school's main teaching building.
Led by Victor, the students walked towards the back of the teaching building, while Fafnir, Martha, and Allen went to the first floor of the teaching building.
Upon entering the dimly lit corridor, Fafnir felt a chill despite it being nearly noon.
Fafnir walked in front, Martha followed behind him, and Alan followed closely behind his sister.
The door at the end of the corridor was ajar, and Fafnir knocked gently.
"Come in."
The voice was neither warm nor cold.
The room was large and cluttered with miscellaneous items. Fafner saw brooms, buckets, and stacks of books piled high in a space roughly the size of a classroom.
A thin old man sat behind a table, with pointed ears and gray hair, writing something with his head down.
He stopped what he was doing, looked up, and his gray-blue eyes swept over the three people in front of him.
"You are..." He seemed a little puzzled and looked at Fafnir, who was in the lead.
"Hello, teacher. We are new volunteers. We were just brought here today by Bishop Andrei. We are from Lorraine Manor. Lord Zaitsev asked us to report to you," Fafnir replied.
"A new volunteer at Lorraine Manor? Hmm... okay, fill out a form."
The old man rummaged through the forms in the drawer of the table, pulled out three and placed them on the table, then got up and moved a chair over.
"Come, please have a seat."
Martha and Allen looked at each other, and Martha stammered, "Teacher...Teacher, I'm sorry, my brother Allen and I can't write."
"Ha—ah, it's alright. So, can you fill it out?" the old man asked Fafnir.
Fafnir nodded.
"Okay, then you can fill it out for them."
Fafnir sat down in the chair, which was about the same height as the one at home, forcing him to prop himself up with his hands while sitting with his legs dangling in the air.
The table lists the name, age, place of birth, job title, church hierarchy, and personal experience in that order.
Fafner filled in the blanks in order.
Name: Fafner Beckett
Age: 7
Birthplace: Lorraine Territory, the Holy Kingdom of Elves
Personal experience: Worked as a handyman at Lorraine Manor.
"Teacher, what should I fill in for the 'Job Title' and 'Church Rank Sequence' fields?"
"These two columns... fill in 'volunteer' in the first column, and don't fill in the second column."
"Thanks."
After Fafnir finished filling out his form, he turned to Alan and Martha and told them what was on the form.
"The main difference is that we were born in different places than you. You should remember our ages, right?"
Martha replied, "Allen and I were born in the Nunns Empire, in the White Wing Province of the Nunns Empire."
After filling out the forms one by one, Fafnir handed them to the old man and slid off the chair.
"What specific tasks did you perform when you were doing odd jobs?"
"I'm in charge of mopping the floors, from the first to the fourth floor of Lorraine Castle."
"Me? I...sometimes help in the kitchen, sometimes chase away birds and animals in the fields."
"I help out in the laundry room."
"Hmm..." the old man pondered for a moment, "The work assignments are as follows:
Fafner Beckett, you are in charge of cleaning the corridors of the teaching building and dormitory building. Just use a mop. The dormitory building should be mopped once a day, and the teaching building corridors should be mopped at least once every two days.
Martha, you'll be in charge of helping out in the laundry room. Most of the teachers and students at our school do their own laundry, so your work isn't too busy, except for a very few people.
Allen, before lunch and dinner every day, you'll help out in the cafeteria kitchen. Remember, the cafeteria is off-campus.
After you finish your work, you can go to the library to apply for a library card to study, or you can audit classes after obtaining permission from the teachers of each subject.
In addition, unlike students, volunteers can only go home one day a month.
You're on break for the next couple of days, and not all the students have arrived yet. Work will resume the day after tomorrow. You can go to the dormitory building at the back now.
That's all. Any other questions?
"No, teacher," the three replied in turn.
After leaving the logistics department, Allen said softly, "It should be easier than the work at the manor."
Martha breathed a sigh of relief: "The people here don't seem difficult to get along with."
……
Upon arriving at the dormitory building behind the teaching building, Fafnir found that the students were no longer there, perhaps already inside their dormitories. Victor was waiting for them on the first floor.
